Maiya Dean-Tuggle Pro. Vanderburg Discri mination Essay 9/5/17 A time that I experienced discrimination is when I use to work at Bed Bath Beyond from 2015- Jan 201 7. I loved the job at first up until mid-Nov ember of 2016 when a new manager came. I felt like he did not like me because of my age. He always complaine d about my age cutting my hours, trying to say that I couldn't do ce rtain things because I wasn't of age. I was 16 when I started there but by the time the new manager got there I had turned 17 so things were different and I could do more. I started off as a cashier and then moved up to a Cu stomer Service Representative and a Sales Associate, I us e to work 6 hours 5 days a week and w hen he came along he cut my hours to 4 hours 4 days a week and cut my break to 15 minutes instead of my normal 30 minutes . When I asked why that happened he stated "You're under age of 18 years so I have to give you less hours. Mind you there was a sign in our break room that had the state age requirements for teens under 18 years old which explained the amount of hours the child can work up to during the school year and summer time break which he had his information wrong . I got my mom involved and that's when things changed back to my normal hours but I c ould still feel the negativity. Him still watching my every move to see if I was doing the right thing; everyone else loved me because I was the younges t there and ver y mature, so finally I decided that I needed to move on because it just wasn't the same. I had to stick it out for alm ost 2 months finding a new job, once I gave my notice the manager started being nicer but I know he was happy to get rid of me just by the way he was acting knowing I was leaving in 2 week s. From this experience it taught me to be aware for other situations that can happen like this. Up until the last day of work which was January 13 th 2017 I still remained positive, I know people like to get reactions but that can lead to even more unnecessary problems.
